Gertz was raised in the Glenview suburb of Chicago, Illinois, where she was born. She attended public schools and earned her high school diploma from Maine East. She has two brothers, Michael and Scott, and her parents are Sharyn and Walter Gertz, a builder and contractor. Gertz, a Jew, was brought up in a Conservative Jewish home.

Career:

She attended New York University for drama after being spotted by Norman Lear in a nationwide talent search. Gertz and Andrew Dice Clay co-starred in an episode of Diff’rent Strokes when they were both young actors. She was also a regular cast member on The Facts of Life, where she played Blair’s best friend and classmate Boots St. Clair. Beginning with the romantic comedy Endless Love in 1981, Gertz went on to act in the TV sitcom Square Pegs in 1982 and 1983. In the 1987 film Less than Zero, she played the lead part of the friend of Robert Downey Jr.’s hopeless heroin user. She co-starred alongside Kiefer Sutherland and Jason Patric in the 1987 film The Lost Boys as Star, the latter’s “half vampire” girlfriend.

After working as a perfumer for Lanvin in Paris, Gertz moved back to the United States and scored a supporting role in the 1996 blockbuster Twister, among other roles in films including Solarbabies and Crossroads from 1986, Listen to Me with Kirk Cameron from 1989, The Boyfriend School, and Jersey Girl. One of Jerry’s girlfriends in the 1994 episode of Seinfeld titled “The Stall,” she played a phone sex operator who wouldn’t “spare a square” of toilet paper for Elaine. She also had a role as Sarah in the 1994 TV movie This Can’t Be Love, which starred Katharine Hepburn, Anthony Quinn, and Jason Bateman. Later, in 1997, Gertz played Dr. Nina Pomerantz, a recurring character on ER. During Friends’ pre-production, she reportedly was given the part of Rachel Green, but she turned it down. 

In 2000, Gertz began a recurring role as John Cage’s girlfriend Kimmy Bishop on the Fox smash Ally McBeal. Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series nominated Gertz for an Emmy. In the show’s last season in 2002, she came back as a guest star for one more episode. In 2002, she again portrayed Gilda Radner in the TV movie Gilda Radner: It’s Always Something.  Judy Miller, played by Gertz on Still Standing, was played by Radner on SNL. Still Standing, a sitcom she co-starred on with Mark Addy from 2002 to 2006, was her longest-running and most successful television show to date.

Undercover Christmas starred Gertz as Brandy, the girlfriend of a wanted felon, and in 2005, Gertz starred as Marilyn Gambrell in the TV movie Fighting the Odds: The Marilyn Gambrell Story. Between 2009 and 2010, she was a regular on HBO’s Entourage as Marlo Klein, the wife of Ari Gold’s new business partner Andrew Klein, an agent at Miller-Gold Talent Agency. In the episode “Slow Down Your Neighbors” from the fourth season of Modern Family, she made her return to mainstream TV. The 2011 film A Better Life, for which she received an Oscar nomination, premiered in select theaters in late June and early July and was released on DVD in October.

While starring on the ABC comedy The Neighbors from 2012 to 2014, Gertz played the mother of a human family who relocates to a neighborhood populated by extraterrestrials.
